Disaster Recovery

One of the major components of a Business Continuity Plan is a Disaster Recovery Plan. If a Business Continuity Plan cannot be implemented due to cost or time constraints or other Office Wave Technology Solutions recommends ensuring that at the very least a Disaster Recovery Plan is implemented. The key components of a Disaster Recovery Plan are :
  1. Regular backups. A backup that was made weeks or months ago can force you to rebuild your most recent projects from scratch. Depending on how much data your business handles, even backing up your data on a daily basis might not be often enough.
  2. Offsite locations. Having a secondary site can help to keep your business running if your main office is damaged too badly to return to right away. Keeping offsite backups for your data will allow you to keep your company’s virtual presence running smoothly while you relocate to a new physical space.
  3. Service redundancy. Even more than a physical location, it’s important to having a set of secondary resources, such as alternate communication lines to use if the phone network goes down, or backups for the company email server.
  4. Employee preparation. Each of your employees must be familiar with the recovery plan, and what they need to do in the event of a disaster.
  5. Succession planning. A great disaster recovery plan can fall apart if the particular employee it depends on is suddenly unavailable, and no one else knows how to step in. Your employees need backups, too.
  6. Awareness. For many businesses, the weakest part of their disaster recovery plan is a lack of serious attention. Overcoming the human tendency to view a disaster as unlikely is critical to minimizing the damage if and when one occurs.
  7. TESTING. Most businesses that have a backup system have never actually test the backed up inforamtion. By having a secondary site to act as a testing location, organization can verify their Recovery portion of the Disaster Recovery Plan will be available.

What is the Difference Between Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery?

A Disaster Recovery Plan deals with recovering Information Technology (IT) assets after a disastrous interruption. Both imply a stoppage in critical operations and are reactive.
Recognizing that some services or products must be continuously delivered without interruption, there has been a shift from Business Resumption Planning to Business Continuity Planning.
A business continuity plan enables critical services or products to be continually delivered to clients. Instead of focusing on resuming a business after critical operations have ceased, or recovering after a disaster, a business continuity plan endeavors to ensure that critical operations continue to be available.

Key Factors for a Disaster Recovery Plan

Ensure to remember a Disaster can include everything from a simple file deletion to a server failure to a flood/fire within the organization.

  • Get Upper Management Support - unless management buys into the importance of the plan finding a budget for a DR Plan will be difficult
  • Set Expectations for The Disaster Recovery Plan - ensure to include all critical aspects of a recovery - focus on what is most critical to have in case of a disaster
  • Create a Detailed Project Plan and Budget - indentify and document all of the required resources (everything systems to staff). Ensure to include things like applications, software licenses, hardware requirements etc.
  • Admit That You Didn't Think of Everything - a disaster recovery plan must be treated as a continous work in progress. There are times when changes are made to critical applications/infrastructure which will not be included in the original plan. By constantly reviewing the Disaster Recovery Plan any changes can be made to ensure everything is up to date.
  • Avoid Scope Creep - ensure to keep the final goal in mind - the recovery of systems and applications after a disaster. Thinks like personal pictures, personal music or funny videos may not be a critical aspect of the Disaster Recovery Plan.
  • Select the Best to Obtain the Best - ensure to select the most reliable and best people within your organization to maintain, manage and run the plan. These people will ensure the Disaster Recovery Plan receives the attention it deserves.
  • Manage the Plan - much like a Business Plan a Disaster Recovery plan must be managed. Assess the quality of the work being done. Ensure the highest possible standards are maintained.
  • Report Early and Often - create an email distribution list that you can use to send a weekly/monthly/quarterly updates.
  • Pick the right software - every business is different (although there are similarities). What is critical to one may not be available to another. Ensure to have the right solution for the business rather than working with one size fits all type of systems.
  • Test Often - probably the most overlooked aspect of a Disaster Recovery Plan

Generally speaking a descent software rated in the 3-3.5 out of 5 starts. The main software - True Image is known to be easy to use with an improved interface (2015). Must use Acronis storage - unknown where the storage resides. No plain file backup as well.

    Asigra

Probably one of the best backup systems out there. Includes backup of Office 365, Salesforce.com and Google Apps. Data integrity is always verified. Restoration of systems is still an issue due to the complexity of the restore procedures. Continuous recoveries are not possible - for testing purposes. If Recovery Time Objectives are a critical aspect of the business, it may not be the best solution, however it is one of the best for general backup as data is verified numerous times.

    Infrascale

This is an up and comer in the Disaster Recovery/Backup industry. It offers many of the features found in higher end systems - online storage, quick local recovery, external device and online virtual system. Cost may be a bit higher then the average software based system as well the number of resellers may be low due to complexities of the system.
